Course Memo

History of Christianity II provides a comprehensive examination of Christianity’s dynamic evolution from the Reformation era to the contemporary period.  Through an exploration of key themes, movements, and pivotal moments, this course offers a nuanced understanding of the interplay between Christian doctrine, praxis, and broader social and cultural contexts.  Students will analyze significant historical events within the history of Christianity including internal schisms and the emergence of diverse denominational traditions. Emphasis will be placed on discerning the motivations, ideologies, and impacts of these movements within Christian communities and in the broader society.  In addition to internal developments, the course adopts a holistic perspective by situating the evolution of Christianity within a nexus of global historical phenomena.  Topics such as the trans-Atlantic slave trade, Western imperialism, New World colonialism, revolutions and post-colonial societies will be examined alongside the development of Christianity.  This approach enables students to better understand intricate connections between religion, modes of power, and social transformation.

Richmond: This course will be offered in hybrid format. It will meet each Monday online synchronously with the exception of the following dates, which will be in-person:  January 6, January 27, March 3, and March 31.
